Developer Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing wants to build what it calls California's largest data center, close to 1 million square feet, on farmland next to homes in the city of Imperial. After months of public outcry over water and power use, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors approved a moratorium on new data center permits on June 16, 2026 and later voted to extend the freeze into 2027. The developer has sued the county over the moratorium and sued the Imperial Irrigation District seeking Colorado River water rights, while the city of Imperial has separately challenged the project's environmental review.
