Hut 8 Corp proposed a 5 billion dollar, 500 megawatt data center on 200 acres of farmland in Laenna Township near Latham. After the Logan County Board first passed a 60 day moratorium in February 2026, it ultimately approved a full 12 month moratorium on data center projects by a 6 to 4 vote on May 19, 2026. Hut 8 warned the pause could kill the project because its agreement with Ameren Illinois would expire, and the company has not said whether the proposal is still active.

Power bills in Logan County
Most of the county is served by Ameren Illinois.
Capacity costs baked into the summer supply price are the main channel through which data center growth is already raising Ameren Illinois electric bills. This is a routine annual true up of Ameren's delivery charges, not tied to data centers, and regulators said it should not noticeably move a typical bill. Ameren Illinois natural gas delivery rate case adds about $3.65 a month to a typical bill, decided November 19, 2025.
Ameren Illinois asked the Illinois Commerce Commission for a 129 million dollar increase in natural gas delivery rates. On November 19, 2025 the ICC approved 73 million dollars instead, a 43 percent cut from the request. That works out to roughly a 3.65 dollar a month increase on a typical residential gas bill, well below the 8 to 10 dollar increase Ameren originally sought.
