Denver based developer Tract wants to build the Cannon Falls Technology Park, a data center campus that could reach 30 billion dollars in investment over 20 years, on 253 acres annexed into the city between Highway 52 and Rochester Boulevard. The Cannon Falls City Council approved a conditional use permit for data centers and a development agreement with Tract on 4 to 2 votes, with a dedicated Dakota Electric Association substation planned to serve the site. A final plat for the project went before the council in spring 2026.

Google announced its first Minnesota data center, code named Project Skyway, on a 480 acre site in Pine Island, about 70 miles southeast of Minneapolis, alongside a deal to bring 1,900 megawatts of new wind, solar, and battery power to Xcel Energy's grid. The company says the facility will use air cooling and no water for cooling. The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy sued developer Ryan Companies and the city, arguing the project's environmental review was inadequate, and a judge ordered construction temporarily halted in May 2026 while the lawsuit is heard.
