Amazon broke ground in May 2026 on a 10 billion dollar, 650 acre, 21 building campus in Hamlet. State regulators held a July 2026 public hearing on draft air permits for roughly 650 diesel backup generators, drawing opposition from residents citing existing pollution burden. Amazon says the campus will use outside air cooling about 93 percent of the year.
