Vancouver based developer Jason Bak, through a company called Green Data, pitched a data center and a roughly 10,000 acre solar array near Socorro in potential partnership with New Mexico Tech, proposing to use atmospheric water generation instead of local aquifer water for cooling. New Mexico Tech's president announced the project was halted, in large part because the university does not own enough contiguous land to host it. After public opposition, the Socorro County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a yearlong moratorium on new data center development on unincorporated county land and began forming an advisory committee to study future rules. A related pitch by the same company at Spaceport America was separately rejected by the New Mexico land commissioner.
