TeraWulf has secured an 80 year ground lease on about 183 acres at the shuttered, coal fired Cayuga power plant on Cayuga Lake in Lansing, aiming to build up to 400 megawatts of AI and high performance computing capacity, with an initial 138 megawatts targeted for 2026. More than 20,000 people signed a petition urging the Lansing Town Board to reject the plan, and the board voted 7 to 1 on July 14, 2026 for a 182 day moratorium on new data center development, running through January 25, 2027, on top of New York's separate statewide permitting freeze.
