Jefferson County and the City of Madras have pushed a rezoning of 195 acres of farmland off Dogwood Lane for a large, undisclosed data center project, bypassing available industrial land inside Madras's urban growth boundary. Central Oregon LandWatch, local farmers, and the Jefferson County Farm Bureau are opposing the rezoning, citing emails suggesting county officials favored this specific farmland site as early as 2023, and the case has gone before the state Land Conservation and Development Commission. No developer has been publicly named, and the city of Madras has separately said it is not currently entertaining a data center proposal.
