Jasper County commissioners unanimously approved development agreements on June 15, 2026 for a 7 billion dollar AWS data center campus called Project Rise on a 304 acre NIPSCO-owned parcel near the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield. AWS will provide 98 million dollars in upfront funding plus 23 million dollars annually for 10 years, and 1.25 billion dollars to offset ratepayer impact; the campus will rely primarily on air cooling, using water-based cooling only about 2 percent of the year.
