Bitcoin mining company Boxminer.io proposed a 20 megawatt, closed loop cooled data center on 19.5 acres of the La Pine Industrial Park along Reed Road, promising an 800 million dollar investment and up to 200 jobs, a figure later revised down to 50 to 60. Residents packed council meetings to object that the load was equivalent to 15 times the town's current electricity use, and raised concerns about groundwater, noise, and hazardous air releases, while city staff questioned the developer's job and revenue claims. The La Pine City Council unanimously rejected the project on May 27, 2026.
