Google is behind a proposed data center campus in Hermantown, outside Duluth, that was kept confidential by city officials for roughly a year before the company confirmed its involvement in March 2026. The company has scaled the plan back from four buildings to three, now about 1.66 million square feet on a 234 acre forested site, and has offered to pay for an estimated 130 million dollars in water, sewer, and road upgrades. A lawsuit and an organized opposition group have challenged the secrecy and tax subsidies, and Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources flagged gaps in the project's environmental review in August 2026.
