Lerner Enterprises, through its affiliate Brightseat Associates LLC, won approval from the Prince George's County planning board in March 2024 and final approvals in October 2024 for a 5 billion dollar, five building data center campus called Brightseat Tech Park at the former Landover Mall site, spanning 4.1 million square feet on 87 acres with up to 820 megawatts of power. Facing sustained protests from residents over water, energy, and environmental justice concerns in a majority Black county, County Executive Aisha Braveboy issued an executive order in September 2025 pausing new data center development and creating a task force to study the industry. Because Lerner's permits were issued before that pause took effect, the project could move forward if the executive order lapses; the county council separately voted in 2026 to extend and then reconsider the broader moratorium and to reinstate detailed site plan review for future data center projects.
