Microsoft Data Center Campus (Project Ruthenium)
Microsoft. Approved.
Microsoft's sixth West Des Moines area data center campus, known internally as Project Ruthenium, would sit on 132 acres near Veterans Parkway and Southwest 60th Street in Madison County. The West Des Moines City Council approved a development agreement in May 2024 that includes about 15 million dollars in city spending on roads and utilities, with site work expected in 2025 ahead of building construction starting in 2026. The first phase alone is valued at more than 210 million dollars.

What it would mean nearby
MidAmerican Energy is asking the commission for a 5.2% residential increase (MidAmerican Energy natural gas rate increase (docket RPU-2026-0001)). On a $58 monthly bill that is about $3 to $5 a month. This case does not set rates directly, but the new solar plant it approves will eventually be paid for through customer rates, and MidAmerican has said data center growth is a major reason it is needed.
