IREN, an Australia based company, is proposing Project Emerald, a roughly 1.2 to 1.6 gigawatt AI data center on about 2,000 acres along US Highway 69 just south of Kiowa in Pittsburg County, described as a 50 billion dollar development. A county review committee recommended tax increment finance incentives, but the Pittsburg County Board of Commissioners voted in 2026 to table the incentive district and send it back for renegotiation after residents packed a public hearing to challenge its terms. Public Service Company of Oklahoma has said the area's power demand already exceeds current production.
