New York based TransGas Development Systems proposed an off grid natural gas power plant to run more than 2,400 megawatts of generation, powering a data center at the Harless Industrial Park near the Mingo-Logan county line in Holden. The state Department of Environmental Protection held public hearings in September 2025 after community outcry over air quality, then granted air quality permits for the project in October 2025 despite the opposition. Mingo County residents later filed a federal lawsuit against the company over the power plant and data center plans.
TransGas Development Systems has proposed a second, near identical off grid natural gas power plant and data center campus at the former Twisted Gun Golf Course site in Wharncliffe, Mingo County, alongside its Harless Industrial Park project nearby. As with the Harless site, the state Department of Environmental Protection granted air quality permits in October 2025 over strong objections from Mingo and Logan county residents concerned about air pollution, water, and quality of life. TransGas has also described a related, much larger Adams Fork Energy project that would include the world's largest natural gas fueled ammonia plant.
