Known as Project Marvel, this QTS data center would occupy more than 1,600 acres on the edge of Bessemer with up to 1,200 megawatts and 4.5 million square feet, reported at up to 14.5 billion dollars. The city council approved rezoning despite the project being kept largely secret, and a nondisclosure agreement requiring officials to destroy records drew a lawsuit threat and broad opposition.

Alabama Power RSE rate freeze holds base rates flat, decided December 8, 2025. Fuel and storm riders are separate and can still move.
The Alabama Public Service Commission approved a consent order on December 8, 2025 freezing several cost factors that normally move Alabama Power's rates automatically, including fuel costs, purchased power costs, government mandate cost recovery, and the Rate Stabilization and Equalization (RSE) formula that adjusts rates based on the company's earnings. The freeze runs for two years and was extended to also block any automatic RSE increase in 2027. The order does not lower current rates, it only pauses further automatic increases under these mechanisms, and it came alongside PSC discussion of rising data center demand in the state, including a large Meta facility near Montgomery.
