Google wants to build a data center campus of up to six buildings on 545 acres in unincorporated Linn County, just north of Palo and next to the closed Duane Arnold nuclear plant, and is pursuing the project through annexation into the small city of Palo rather than the county. Linn County supervisors voted in August 2026 not to add an exception to its 18 month data center moratorium for projects co-located with nuclear plants, after residents said a possible 2029 restart of Duane Arnold was not reason enough to allow one. The City of Palo said on October 9, 2026 that it expects to receive a formal annexation application for the project soon, with a community open house scheduled for October 22, 2026, and a required regional water study on hold until the annexation process moves forward.
