Is a Data Center Coming

Microsoft Data Center Campus (Project Osmium)

Microsoft. Operating.

Microsoft's Project Osmium is a 200 acre data center campus straddling northern Warren and Madison counties on the edge of West Des Moines, part of a 1.5 to 2 billion dollar investment. City leaders said Microsoft would not receive a property tax abatement for this campus, and instead its property taxes would help pay for nearby streets, sewers and water lines. It is one of three Microsoft data center campuses built in the West Des Moines area since 2008, alongside the newer Ruthenium project.

What it would mean nearby

MidAmerican Energy is asking the commission for a 5.2% residential increase (MidAmerican Energy natural gas rate increase (docket RPU-2026-0001)). On a $58 monthly bill that is about $3 to $5 a month. This case does not set rates directly, but the new solar plant it approves will eventually be paid for through customer rates, and MidAmerican has said data center growth is a major reason it is needed.
