Developer Trent Overhue had proposed converting part of a shuttered 160,000 square foot Walmart at 5825 West Hope Avenue in Milwaukee into a roughly 19,000 square foot data processing facility needing about 7 megawatts of power, alongside a self storage facility, a library branch and affordable housing on the same site. After more than 300 residents registered opposition over energy, water, noise and air quality concerns, Alderman Mark Chambers announced on July 6, 2026 that the computing facility component had been dropped from the redevelopment plan entirely. The revised Midtown Center proposal keeps the self storage facility, relocated library branch, and separately approved affordable housing, but no longer includes any data center use.
