Madison Gas and Electric filed its Very Large Customer tariff application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin on July 15, 2026, aimed at setting rates for hyperscale data center customers. Cloverleaf Infrastructure LLC, a data center developer reported to have interest in Dane County, filed a motion on August 13, 2026 to intervene in the case.

American Transmission Company's roughly 1.3 to 1.7 billion dollar transmission project to serve the Vantage data center campus, whose tenants include OpenAI and Oracle, in Port Washington had been deemed a complete application on December 15, 2025. On August 6, 2026 the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin voted unanimously to revoke that completeness determination, the first time in the agency's 95 year history it has done so, citing 564 revised or refiled documents that made the record too murky to review; ATC must now restart the application process as an entirely new proceeding, and the case's earlier December 2026 decision deadline no longer applies.

We Energies' docket 5-UR-112 seeks roughly a 16 percent rate increase totaling 480 million dollars over two years, raising the average residential bill about 10.28 percent in 2027 and 5.52 percent in 2028. A public hearing was held September 1, 2026 in Milwaukee where residents objected, with two more hearings set for September 29, 2026 in Green Bay and public comments due by October 5, 2026; a Public Service Commission decision is expected later in the fall.

Xcel Energy's Wisconsin utility, Northern States Power, asked for about an 11.8 percent electric increase in 2026 with more in 2027, plus higher natural gas rates. Regulators approved a smaller amount in November 2025, about 126 million dollars in electric revenue and 22 million in gas over the two years, effective January 2026, working out to roughly 13.47 dollars a month more on a typical residential electric bill in 2026 and 24.91 dollars more in 2027 compared with 2025.

Madison Gas and Electric's standard rate case for 2026 and 2027 was approved by state regulators through a unanimous settlement, raising a typical residential electric bill by only about 13 cents a month in 2026 but roughly 5.44 dollars a month more in 2027, plus higher natural gas charges, for a combined increase regulators put at about 31.3 million dollars. This general case set MGE's overall cost of service and was not specifically about data centers.

Alliant Energy asked the Public Service Commission to approve an individual electric service contract with Meta affiliate Degas LLC covering 220 megawatts of power for the Beaver Dam data center over a 10 year term. Regulators approved it on May 7, 2026 but criticized the secrecy around the filing, including nondisclosure agreements, heavily redacted documents and a corporate pseudonym, and said they want less of a black box approach and longer contract terms in future cases. Alliant says the deal makes Meta cover the full cost of serving the site so other customers are not harmed.

Alliant Energy's Wisconsin utility asked for an electric increase of about 8.3 percent in 2026 and 5.7 percent in 2027, plus a smaller natural gas increase, citing grid investment. The Public Service Commission approved a unanimous settlement, trimming the increase to 5.4 percent in 2026 and 5 percent in 2027 on electric rates, which works out to about 9.57 dollars a month more on a typical residential bill in 2026 and 17.45 dollars a month more in 2027 compared with 2025.

We Energies asked state regulators in March 2025 to create a new rate structure for its biggest electric customers, mainly AI data centers. On April 24, 2026 the Public Service Commission approved the plan but toughened it: a 15 year minimum contract instead of the 10 years the utility wanted, a lower 100 megawatt size threshold, and no more capacity only option, so a data center cannot pay for just part of the power it reserves. We Energies has said data centers are expected to cover billions of dollars in new power plant costs planned for 2027 and 2028.
