Microsoft has approval for mass grading on a 791 acre expansion area at its Mount Pleasant campus, planned for about 2 million square feet of additional data center space. In January 2026 the village board approved site plans allowing up to 15 more Microsoft data centers here over the next decade, part of a further 13.3 billion dollars in investment Microsoft has proposed for the area.
Microsoft Fairwater 1 (Mount Pleasant) Microsoft
Microsoft's first Mount Pleasant data center, called Fairwater, sits on about 200 acres and became fully operational in June 2026 with roughly 550 full time employees on site. It runs on 337.6 megawatts of power and Microsoft describes it as home to one of its most powerful AI supercomputing clusters. It is served by We Energies under the utility's new large customer tariff for data centers.
Microsoft Project Nova (Caledonia) Microsoft
Microsoft sought to rezone 244 acres near County Line Road and Highway 32 in Caledonia, across from the We Energies Oak Creek power plant, for what would have been a third Racine County data center under the code name Project Nova. More than 2,000 residents signed a petition against it, and Microsoft withdrew the proposal on October 8, 2025, saying it would look for another site in the area.

Power bills in Racine County
Most of the county is served by We Energies.
We Energies is asking the commission for a 9.3% residential increase (We Energies general electric and gas rate case for 2027 and 2028 (docket 5-UR-112)). On a $160 monthly bill that is about $13 to $17 a month. This tariff does not change home electric rates by itself, but it is meant to make large new data centers pay the full cost of the power plants and lines built to serve them instead of spreading those costs across everyone's bill. Transmission upgrades like this are typically billed to every electric customer in the state through transmission charges, not just to the data center that made the new line necessary, which is why the cost allocation question matters for ordinary bills even outside the four counties involved.
We Energies filed a new general rate request in April 2026 seeking about 4.6 percent more on electric bills in 2027 and 4.5 percent more in 2028, plus higher natural gas charges, citing grid costs that include new power plants driven by data center growth. Consumer advocates are pushing the commission to make sure data centers and other large customers pay their share of that cost rather than residential customers. A public hearing is scheduled for September 1, 2026, with a commission vote expected in November 2026.
