TeraWulf is acquiring the shuttered, 355 acre Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac River near Newburg in Charles County, planning to convert the old oil fired plant into a data center campus with an initial 500 megawatts of capacity and an eventual target of 1 gigawatt. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission authorized the sale on July 29, 2026, but the project still needs Charles County approval of a zoning text amendment to allow data centers, which the county Planning Commission voted to recommend denying on June 1, 2026, leaving a final decision to county commissioners. Nearby Newburg residents, in a census tract the state already classifies as environmentally overburdened, have raised concerns about drinking water, air quality from backup diesel generators, and the site's history of coal ash violations.
