Is a Data Center Coming

Upper Mount Bethel Data Center Campus (Slate Belt Holdings)

Slate Belt Holdings. Filed. 2000 MW.

Slate Belt Holdings, working with Talen Energy and River Pointe Logistics, is proposing a huge data center campus on more than 750 acres of industrially zoned land in Upper Mount Bethel Township, with up to 24 buildings and as much as 2 gigawatts of power. More than 200 residents packed an August 2026 hearing on a proposed township ordinance that would set zoning and performance standards for the project. A draft agreement would require closed loop or non drinking water cooling and would pay 50 million dollars to local nonprofits if the project reaches full size.

What it would mean nearby

PPL Electric distribution base rate case settlement raised residential rates 4.9% from July 2026: about $8 to $10 a month on a $184 bill. The order is meant to keep new data centers from pushing their power costs onto residential electric bills by requiring developers to pay for all of their own electricity. This does not change anyone's electric rate directly, but it is meant to stop the cost of new substations and power lines built for data centers from being added to everyone else's bill.
