As of March 2026, the county had received no formal zoning application for the site. Sedgwick County imposed a moratorium on data center applications in January 2026 that has been extended twice while planners draft regulations, with a public hearing on the draft rules set for November 12, 2026.

NextEra Energy, the nation's largest electricity company and a recent Google data center development partner, has signed option agreements giving it exclusive purchase rights on nearly 800 acres between 311th and 279th streets west, off 21st Street North, near Garden Plain in Sedgwick County. The option agreements were signed between July 2025 and January 2026 and run for three years, but no formal zoning application had been filed as of early 2026. Sedgwick County's data center moratorium, first imposed in January 2026, remains in effect while planners draft permanent rules, with a public hearing set for November 12, 2026.
