Microsoft has purchased about 272 acres along US-131 near 144th Avenue in Dorr Township, Allegan County, with roughly 128 of those acres eyed for a future data center. The township has not received a formal site plan and passed a 12 month moratorium on data center development in March 2026 while residents raise concerns about traffic, water, and farmland loss. Consumers Energy would be expected to supply the power if the project moves forward.

Consumers Energy is asking the commission for a 9.8% residential increase (2027-2028 electric rate case (docket U-22070)). On a $155 monthly bill that is about $13 to $17 a month. 2026 electric rate case (docket U-21870) raised residential rates 8.9% from May 2026: about $12 to $16 a month on a $155 bill. This does not change a typical home bill by itself, but it sets the rules meant to stop the cost of new data center power hookups from being spread across every Consumers Energy customer's rate.

Consumers Energy filed a new electric rate case on June 2, 2026, asking for a 456 million dollar revenue increase, about 9.8 percent more from residential customers, to cover a 12 month period ending April 2028. If approved as filed, a typical residential bill of about 155 dollars a month would rise by roughly 13 dollars. The case is still pending before the Michigan Public Service Commission with no decision date yet set.
