Microsoft has applied to rezone the Covenant Business Park and neighboring farmland at 4687 Alden Nash Avenue in Lowell Charter Township, east of Grand Rapids, for a data center campus that could cost 500 million to 1 billion dollars. The company only confirmed its own identity as the developer in January 2026, after months of anonymous speculation and a standing room only public meeting. No hearing date has been set yet, at the company's own request, while it works on community engagement.

This does not change a typical home bill by itself, but it sets the rules meant to stop the cost of new data center power hookups from being spread across every Consumers Energy customer's rate.
