Microsoft bought roughly 316 acres of land, including a parcel at 7174 Patterson Avenue, for a possible data center campus in Gaines Township just south of Grand Rapids. The company has filed a rezoning request and agreed to a detailed set of legally binding conditions, but a full site plan and public hearings on construction details are still ahead. Consumers Energy is expected to supply the power.
Microsoft has applied to rezone the Covenant Business Park and neighboring farmland at 4687 Alden Nash Avenue in Lowell Charter Township, east of Grand Rapids, for a data center campus that could cost 500 million to 1 billion dollars. The company only confirmed its own identity as the developer in January 2026, after months of anonymous speculation and a standing room only public meeting. No hearing date has been set yet, at the company's own request, while it works on community engagement.
Switch's Pyramid campus near Grand Rapids has been operating for years inside a converted Steelcase pyramid building and is one of the largest data center campuses in the eastern United States. The company is expanding the site toward a planned 1.8 million square feet and up to 320 megawatts of power, with a second building nearly complete and a third in planning. This is an established, already operating site rather than a new proposal.

Consumers Energy is asking the commission for a 9.8% residential increase (2027-2028 electric rate case (docket U-22070)). On a $155 monthly bill that is about $13 to $17 a month. 2026 electric rate case (docket U-21870) raised residential rates 8.9% from May 2026: about $12 to $16 a month on a $155 bill. This does not change a typical home bill by itself, but it sets the rules meant to stop the cost of new data center power hookups from being spread across every Consumers Energy customer's rate.
Consumers Energy filed a new electric rate case on June 2, 2026, asking for a 456 million dollar revenue increase, about 9.8 percent more from residential customers, to cover a 12 month period ending April 2028. If approved as filed, a typical residential bill of about 155 dollars a month would rise by roughly 13 dollars. The case is still pending before the Michigan Public Service Commission with no decision date yet set.
