Meta Altoona Data Center

Meta. Operating.

Meta's Altoona campus is the company's largest data center in the world, spanning more than 5 million square feet after a seventh expansion completed around 2025 pushed total investment above 2.5 billion dollars. The site has been running since construction began in 2013 and is powered in part by wind energy contracts with MidAmerican Energy. It already employs more than 400 people and drew roughly 1,000 construction workers at its peak.

What it would mean nearby

MidAmerican Energy is asking the commission for a 5.2% residential increase (MidAmerican Energy natural gas rate increase (docket RPU-2026-0001)). On a $58 monthly bill that is about $3 to $5 a month. This case does not set rates directly, but the new solar plant it approves will eventually be paid for through customer rates, and MidAmerican has said data center growth is a major reason it is needed.
