"Project Cannoli" Google Data Center (Van Buren Township)
Google (filed as Panattoni Development). Approved. 1000 MW.
Google and developer Panattoni want to build a 1 gigawatt data center called Project Cannoli on about 230 acres between Haggerty Road and I-275 near I-94 in Van Buren Township. The township board approved the project 5 to 2 in February 2026, but it still needs sign off from state utility regulators on its DTE Energy power contract and from the Great Lakes Water Authority on its 2 to 3 million gallons a day of water use. More than 1,300 residents have signed a petition raising concerns about wetlands, water use, and utility rates.

What it would mean nearby
The cooling design has not been reported. If it uses evaporative cooling, a 1000 MW facility would draw roughly 3.2 million to 11.4 million gallons of water a day, about what 36,500 households use.
DTE Electric is asking the commission for a 9.7% residential increase (2027 electric rate case (docket U-22046)). On a $160 monthly bill that is about $13 to $18 a month. 2026 electric distribution rate case (docket U-21860) raised residential rates 4.1% from March 2026: about $6 to $8 a month on a $160 bill. The order is meant to keep this one data center's power costs off the bills of regular DTE residential customers, but critics argue the fast, largely ex parte approval process did not fully test that promise.
