University of Michigan / Los Alamos Computing Center (Ypsilanti Township)
University of Michigan. Filed. 100 MW.
The University of Michigan, partnered with the federal Los Alamos National Laboratory, has purchased 144 acres on Textile Road along the Huron River in Ypsilanti Township for a 1.2 billion dollar computing and data center that would support nuclear research for the Department of War. Because it is a public university project, it is legally exempt from the township's zoning process, so local officials cannot block it the way they could a private developer's plan. Ypsilanti Township and its water utility have each passed moratoriums on supplying new electric infrastructure and water or sewer service to data centers in response.

What it would mean nearby
The cooling design has not been reported. If it uses evaporative cooling, a 100 MW facility would draw roughly 317,000 to 1.1 million gallons of water a day, about what 3,600 households use.
DTE Electric is asking the commission for a 9.7% residential increase (2027 electric rate case (docket U-22046)). On a $160 monthly bill that is about $13 to $18 a month. 2026 electric distribution rate case (docket U-21860) raised residential rates 4.1% from March 2026: about $6 to $8 a month on a $160 bill. The order is meant to keep this one data center's power costs off the bills of regular DTE residential customers, but critics argue the fast, largely ex parte approval process did not fully test that promise.
