MLGW rate increase (xAI context) Memphis Light Gas and Water
Memphis Light, Gas and Water implemented the final 4 percent step of a 12 percent multi year rate increase approved by the Memphis City Council back in 2023, adding about 5 dollars a month to a typical residential bill starting in January 2026. This general increase is not billed as a data center charge, but it lands the same year xAI's Colossus supercomputer has become one of MLGW's largest customers, and MLGW has published data on xAI's usage after public concern about the facility's power and water draw.
TVA data center rate class proposal Tennessee Valley Authority
TVA is a federal agency, not a state regulated utility, so its own board sets rates rather than a public service commission. The TVA Board of Directors voted at its August 20, 2026 quarterly meeting to approve a dedicated data center rate class, moving data centers off the standard industrial rate; the new rate takes effect October 1, 2026, phased in over three fiscal years to about a 10 percent average bill increase for data center customers, plus new upfront capacity commitment charges of roughly 1.5 million dollars per megawatt for new interconnections.
