xAI's second Memphis campus in Whitehaven is expanding around a roughly 1 million square foot former warehouse, and in March 2026 xAI filed a 659 million dollar permit for further expansion. It depends partly on a gas turbine plant its affiliate built across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi, which is in active federal litigation. The NAACP and Southern Environmental Law Center have appealed related turbine air permits.
xAI's original Colossus supercomputer occupies a former Electrolux factory in South Memphis and became operational in mid-2024 after about 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs were installed in roughly 122 days. By mid-2026 its capacity is reported to be largely leased to Anthropic. This is the site tied to the Shelby County Health Department gas turbine permits and the NAACP and Southern Environmental Law Center legal challenges over air pollution near the Boxtown neighborhood.
